Quick Answer: How Many Studs Do I Need?
Multiply the wall length in feet by 12, divide by your spacing in inches, round up, and add 1 for the end stud. A 40 ft wall at 16" on center needs 31 field studs, then add 2 per corner and 2 per opening and 10% waste. Plates run 3 rows times the wall length, so that same wall takes 120 linear feet of plate. Use the calculator above for your exact studs, plates, and material cost.
Studs by Wall Length and Spacing
Field studs only, before corners, openings, and waste. Add 1 end stud is already included.
| Wall Length | 12" OC | 16" OC | 24" OC |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 ft | 9 | 7 | 5 |
| 12 ft | 13 | 10 | 7 |
| 20 ft | 21 | 16 | 11 |
| 40 ft | 41 | 31 | 21 |
| 100 ft | 101 | 76 | 51 |
Lumber Cost by Stud Size
| Stud Size | Cost per Linear Foot | 8 ft Stud | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2x4 SPF | $0.45-$0.75 | $3.60-$6.00 | Interior walls, standard exterior |
| 2x6 SPF | $0.75-$1.20 | $6.00-$9.60 | Exterior walls, more insulation |
Installed wall framing, material plus labor, runs about $20-$50 per linear foot of wall (typical $32). Lumber prices move week to week, so confirm at your yard before you bid.
Where Framing Takeoffs Go Wrong
- Forgetting the corners and openings. The field stud count is the easy part. A 3-stud corner adds 2 studs, and every door and window eats kings, jacks, and cripples. Miss these and you are short on framing day.
- Skipping the double top plate. Most walls carry a bottom plate and a double top plate, which is 3 rows of lumber the full length of the wall. I have watched guys order studs and forget the plates run the whole perimeter twice up top.
- Ordering exact count with no waste. Crowned, twisted, and split studs get culled. On a long load you will cull a handful. Pad 10% or you make a second trip.
- Mixing up 16 and 24 on center. Going from 16" to 24" cuts your field studs by about a third. Make sure the spacing on the plan matches what you order, especially on 2x6 exterior walls.
- Using wall height for precut studs. An 8 ft wall uses 92-5/8" precut studs, not full 8 ft boards, because the plates take up the rest. This tool prices by the foot so the math stays clean, but order precuts when you can.

How to Use This Calculator
Add up your total wall length
Measure every wall you are framing and add them together. The calculator runs studs across that whole length, so 4 walls in a room get summed into one number in feet.
Set spacing and wall height
Pick 16" on center for most interior and exterior walls, or 24" for some exterior 2x6 walls. Enter the wall height so the lumber takeoff knows how long each stud runs.
Enter corners and openings
Count your corners and your door and window openings. Each corner adds 2 studs for a 3-stud corner, and each opening adds 2 for the king and jack studs.
Review studs, plates, and cost
See total studs to buy with waste, plate linear feet, plate boards, total lumber, and a material cost range. Turn on installed cost to add framing labor at $20 to $50 per linear foot.
Stud Calculator Formulas
Field Studs = ceil(Wall Length x 12 / Spacing) + 1
Corner Studs = Corners x 2
Opening Studs = Openings x 2
Total Studs = ceil((Field + Corner + Opening) x (1 + Waste% / 100))
Plate Linear Feet = Wall Length x Plate Rows
Plate Boards = ceil(Plate Linear Feet / Stock Length)
Total Lumber = Total Studs x Wall Height + Plate Linear Feet
Material Cost = Total Lumber x Price per linear ft Where:
- Wall Length
- = Total feet of wall to be framed
- Spacing
- = On-center spacing in inches: 12, 16, or 24
- Corners, Openings
- = Count of corners and door/window openings
- Plate Rows
- = 2 for single top plate, 3 for double top plate
- Price per linear ft
- = 2x4 is $0.45-$0.75, 2x6 is $0.75-$1.20

Frequently Asked Questions
How many studs do I need for a wall?
Take the wall length in feet, multiply by 12, divide by your spacing in inches, round up, and add 1 for the end stud. A 40 ft wall at 16" on center is 40 x 12 / 16 = 30, plus 1, so 31 field studs. Then add 2 studs per corner and 2 per opening, and pad 10% for waste.
How do I calculate studs for 16 inch on center?
For 16" on center, a quick field rule is three-quarters of a stud per foot of wall, plus one. A 12 ft wall is 12 x 0.75 = 9, plus 1, so 10 studs before corners and openings. The calculator does this exactly with 40 x 12 / 16 instead of the shortcut so the count is right on long walls.
How many studs are in a 2x6 wall at 24 inch on center?
At 24" on center a wall needs about half a stud per foot, plus one. A 20 ft 2x6 wall is 20 x 12 / 24 = 10, plus 1, so 11 field studs. Use the 2x6 Calculator if you are pricing the boards out by length and cost.
How much extra lumber should I add for waste?
I run 10% on a clean square layout and bump it to 15% when the stock is crooked or the job has a lot of short cripple cuts. Crowned and twisted studs get culled fast, so on a big load I would rather have a few extra than send somebody back to the yard mid-frame.
How do contractors price a framing job for a client?
I price wall framing by the linear foot of wall, material plus labor, which runs about $20 to $50 per foot installed depending on height and openings. Run your lumber with this tool and the Framing Cost Calculator, then build the full bid in EstimationPro so the proposal and follow-up go out the same day.
Do I count plates in the stud calculator?
Yes. This tool figures your plates separately as linear feet and boards. A standard wall has a bottom plate and a double top plate, which is 3 rows times the wall length. A 40 ft wall needs 120 linear feet of plate, or 8 sixteen-foot boards.
