Quick Answer: How Much Gutter Do I Need?

Add up every roof edge that drains in linear feet, then add 10% for waste. Plan on one downspout per 30-40 ft of gutter and a hanger every 2 ft. A typical 120 ft single-story run in seamless aluminum needs about 4 downspouts and lands around $700-$1,600 in material before labor. Use the calculator above to get exact downspout count and cost for your roof and gutter type.

Gutter Cost by Material

Material Cost per Linear Foot Best Use
Vinyl$3.00-$5.00Budget jobs, mild climates, DIY
Aluminum (seamless K-style)$4.00-$9.00The standard for most homes
Galvanized steel$6.00-$11.00Heavy snow, large spans
Copper$18.00-$30.00High-end, historic, long life

Material only. Add $3-$7 per linear foot for professional installation. Two-story work and copper push labor toward the high end. Prices vary by region, so get local quotes before you commit.

Typical Gutter Runs by Home Size

Home Gutter Run Downspouts
Small ranch (~1,000 sq ft)90-120 ft3-4
Mid-size single story (~1,800 sq ft)140-180 ft4-5
Two-story (~2,400 sq ft)180-220 ft5-7
Large two-story (~3,200 sq ft)240-300 ft7-9

Where Gutter Jobs Go Wrong

  • Too few downspouts. A long run with one drop overflows in a hard rain no matter how big the gutter is. Water has to get out. One downspout per 30 to 40 feet, minimum two.
  • Hangers spaced too far apart. Save a few bucks on brackets and the gutter sags, holds water, and pulls off the fascia. I space them every 2 ft, tighter where snow loads up.
  • Forgetting the second story in the labor number. The same 150 ft of gutter takes a lot longer and needs more setup at 22 ft than at 12 ft. Price the labor for the actual reach.
  • Measuring walls instead of eaves. Only the roof edges that shed water get gutter. Gable ends usually do not. Walk the roofline and add the real drip edges, not the floor plan.
  • Skipping pitch on the run. Gutters need about a quarter inch of slope per 10 ft toward each downspout. Hang them dead level and they pond, then they leak at the seams.

How to Use This Calculator

Pick your gutter material

Choose vinyl, seamless aluminum, galvanized steel, or copper. Material runs from about $3 per linear foot for vinyl up to $30 for copper, before labor.

Measure your total gutter run

Add up every roof edge that gets a gutter, in feet. A simple rectangular ranch is usually the front and back eaves, so 2 times the longer wall is a quick starting point.

Set stories and waste

Pick 1 or 2 stories so the calculator sizes the downspout drops, then add 10% waste for a simple roof or 15% when there are a lot of corners and short runs.

Review downspouts and cost

See gutter linear feet, downspout count, hangers, and a material cost range. Turn on installation to add $3 to $7 per linear foot of labor.

Gutter Formulas

Gutter LF = Run x (1 + Waste% / 100)
Downspouts = max(2, ceil(Run / 35))
Downspout LF = Downspouts x Drop Height (12 ft 1-story, 22 ft 2-story)
Total Length = Gutter LF + Downspout LF
Hangers = ceil(Gutter LF / 2)
Material Cost = Total Length x Price per linear ft

Where:

Run
= Total roof eaves that get gutter, in feet
Waste%
= Overage for cuts and corners, usually 10-15%
Drop Height
= Downspout feet per drop: ~12 ft single story, ~22 ft two story
Price per linear ft
= Material cost by gutter type, $3.00-$30.00

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate how much gutter I need?

Add up the length of every roof edge that drains, in linear feet, then add 10% for waste. A 40 ft by 30 ft ranch with gutters on the two long sides needs about 80 ft, or roughly 88 ft with waste. Round up to full 10 ft sections so you are not splicing a short scrap into the middle of a run.

How many downspouts do I need?

Plan on one downspout for every 30 to 40 linear feet of gutter, with a minimum of two so water has somewhere to go from both ends. A 120 ft run gets about 4 downspouts. Long runs and steep roofs that dump a lot of water want them closer to the 30 ft end of that range.

How much do gutters cost per linear foot?

Material runs about $3-$5/lf for vinyl, $4-$9 for seamless aluminum, $6-$11 for galvanized steel, and $18-$30 for copper. Professional installation adds $3-$7 per linear foot, and copper or two-story work pushes labor to the high end. Use the gutter calculator above to price your run.

How do contractors price a gutter job for a client?

I price it by the linear foot: gutter plus downspouts plus hangers and elbows, then labor, then my markup. A 150 ft seamless aluminum job on a single story usually lands around $1,200-$2,200 installed. Run the roof numbers with the Roof Area Calculator so your eave measurement is right before you quote.

How many hangers or brackets does a gutter run need?

Space hangers about every 2 feet, or every 18 inches in heavy snow country. A 90 ft run needs roughly 45 to 60 hangers. Skimping on hangers is the number one reason gutters sag and pull away from the fascia a couple winters down the road.

Is seamless aluminum or vinyl gutter better for a contractor to install?

Seamless aluminum is the workhorse for pros: it is rolled to length on site, has no mid-run seams to leak, and lasts 20 plus years. Vinyl is cheaper and DIY-friendly but gets brittle in cold and sags in heat. For a paid install where the warranty is on you, seamless aluminum or steel is the safer call.
