How Much Thinset Do I Need?

The amount of thinset mortar you need depends on two things: total tile area and trowel notch size. A bigger notch leaves more mortar on the substrate, which means fewer square feet per bag. For a standard 12x12 floor tile job with a 1/2" x 1/2" trowel, budget about one 50 lb bag for every 45 sq ft. Always add 10% for waste, uneven substrates, and back-buttering. Use the tile calculator first if you need to figure out how many tiles to buy.

Thinset Coverage by Trowel Size

Coverage per 50 lb bag of thinset mortar. Actual coverage varies with substrate flatness and tile back-buttering.

Trowel Notch Best For Sq Ft / Bag Bags per 100 Sq Ft
1/4" x 1/4" Square Mosaic, small tile (up to 4") ~95 1-2
1/4" x 3/8" U-Notch Medium tile (4" to 8") ~75 2
1/2" x 1/2" Square Standard floor tile (8" to 13") ~45 2-3
1/2" x 3/4" Large tile (13" to 16") ~35 3
3/4" x 3/4" Square Extra-large format (16"+) ~28 4

Common Thinset Mistakes

  • Wrong trowel size. Using a trowel that is too small for your tile means poor coverage on the back of the tile, which leads to hollow spots and cracked tile down the road. Match the trowel to the tile size.
  • Mixing too much at once. Thinset has a working time of about 20 to 30 minutes once mixed. Mix only what you can spread and set in that window. Once it starts to skin over, toss it and mix a fresh batch.
  • Skipping back-buttering on large tile. Any tile 12 inches or larger should be back-buttered (a thin skim coat on the back of the tile) in addition to the troweled bed. This gets you closer to 100% coverage and prevents lippage.
  • Using modified thinset over Ditra. Uncoupling membranes like Schluter Ditra require unmodified thinset so the mortar can cure by air drying through the membrane. Modified thinset stays soft and never fully sets.

How to Use This Calculator

Enter your tile area

Input the length and width of the surface you are tiling. The calculator multiplies them to get total square footage.

Select trowel notch size

Choose the trowel size that matches your tile. Larger tiles require deeper notches, which use more thinset per square foot.

Adjust waste factor and price

Set a waste percentage (10% is standard) and update the bag price to reflect your local cost for 50 lb bags.

Review your thinset estimate

See the exact number of 50 lb bags you need, total weight, and material cost. Print or share the estimate with your crew.

Thinset Calculation Formulas

Tile Area = Length x Width
Adjusted Area = Tile Area x (1 + Waste % / 100)
Bags Needed = Adjusted Area / Coverage per Bag (rounded up)
Total Cost = Bags x Price per Bag

Where:

Coverage per Bag
= Sq ft per 50 lb bag, varies by trowel notch size (28 to 95 sq ft)
Waste Factor
= 10% standard, 15-20% for uneven substrates or back-buttering
Bag Weight
= 50 lb standard bag size for thinset mortar

Frequently Asked Questions

How much thinset do I need per square foot?
It depends on your trowel notch size. A 1/2" x 1/2" square notch (the most common for standard floor tile) covers about 45 sq ft per 50 lb bag. Smaller notches cover more area per bag, while larger notches for big-format tile cover less.
What trowel size should I use for my tile?
Use a 1/4" x 1/4" for mosaic and small tile up to 4 inches. Step up to 1/4" x 3/8" for 4 to 8 inch tile, 1/2" x 1/2" for 8 to 13 inch tile, and 3/4" x 3/4" for anything 16 inches or larger. The goal is full coverage on the back of each tile.
How many square feet does a 50 lb bag of thinset cover?
A 50 lb bag covers 45 to 95 sq ft depending on trowel notch size. With a 1/2" x 1/2" square notch (standard for 12x12 floor tile), expect about 45 sq ft per bag. With a smaller 1/4" x 1/4" notch for mosaic tile, you can get up to 95 sq ft per bag.
Should I use modified or unmodified thinset?
Modified thinset (polymer-modified) is the go-to for most jobs: floors, walls, porcelain, and large-format tile. Use unmodified thinset when setting tile directly over an uncoupling membrane like Ditra, since the membrane manufacturer requires it. Check your membrane specs before buying.
How much extra thinset should I buy for waste?
Plan for 10% extra on straightforward jobs. Bump that to 15-20% for uneven substrates, back-buttered large-format tile, or your first time working with a new trowel size. Thinset is cheap compared to running short mid-job and losing your open time.
